Aspendos sits just 35 km from Side, roughly 35 minutes by road, which makes it one of the easiest and most rewarding half-day trips you can do from the coast. We drive guests out here all season, and the reaction at the theatre entrance is always the same: people stop talking for a moment.
Why Aspendos is worth the drive
The Roman theatre at Aspendos is the best-preserved structure of its kind anywhere in the world. Built in the 2nd century AD, it still has its full stage wall standing, its tiered seating intact, and acoustics so clean that a coin dropped on the stage can be heard from the top rows. It's still used today for opera and ballet performances in summer. Unlike many ruins where you have to imagine what once stood there, here you walk into a building that simply never fell down.
The aqueduct most people miss
A short distance from the theatre lies the Aspendos aqueduct, one of the most complete Roman water systems in Anatolia, including the rare inverted-siphon towers that carried water across the valley. Most coach tours skip it entirely. With your own driver you can ask to stop, stretch your legs, and get the photo without anyone rushing you back onto a bus.
Go early, and combine it
Our honest advice is to leave Side early in the morning. The site is largely open and shadeless, so by midday in summer it gets genuinely hot, and the tour buses arrive in waves after breakfast. An early start means cooler stone, softer light, and the theatre nearly to yourself. The visit itself takes about half a day, which leaves you time to add something on the way back.
What to add on the way back
Two good options sit close to your route. The ruins of Sillyon, a hilltop ancient city far quieter than Aspendos, make a peaceful detour for anyone who likes wandering through history without the crowds. Alternatively, head up to Koprulu Canyon for white-water rafting on the Kopru River, a refreshing way to cool off after the heat of the ruins. If you'd rather keep it gentle, Manavgat town and its waterfall sit only minutes from Side and pair naturally with Aspendos for a fuller day.
Private transfer versus the coach tour
This is where a private trip really earns its keep. A coach tour runs on a fixed timetable, packs in unrelated shopping stops, and herds everyone back at the same moment. With us, your driver waits at Aspendos and brings you back whenever you're ready, so you set the pace. You go when the light is best, linger at the aqueduct, and decide on the day whether to add Sillyon, the canyon, or Manavgat.
Transfer note
While our main work is airport transfers, we run the same dependable service for day trips like this one. The price is fixed and agreed when you book, with no meter and no surge whatever the traffic. We track your flight if you're arriving the same day, meet you in person at arrivals, and carry you in a clean Mercedes with free child seats on request. Pay by cash or card, cancel free up to 24 hours ahead, and reach us any time, day or night. Tell us you'd like to add Aspendos to your Side trip and we'll plan the timing around the heat and the crowds for you.
