The Best Day Trips from Side: A Complete Guide

Published: 10 July 20269 min read

From the sunken city of Kekova to the eternal flames of the Chimaera and the Blue Lagoon at Ölüdeniz — the ten best day trips you can make from Side, with honest distances, drive times and what to expect.

Side sits in the middle of one of the richest stretches of the Turkish coast for day trips. Within a short drive are Roman theatres, a sunken Lycian city, dramatic canyons, turquoise lagoons and one of the country's most famous natural wonders. This guide runs through the best day trips you can make from Side, roughly nearest first, with honest distances and drive times so you can plan a realistic day.

Every trip below can be done as a private door-to-door transfer from your Side hotel — the driver picks you up, takes you straight there, waits while you explore, and brings you back, all at a fixed price with no meter. That's usually far more relaxed than a packed tour bus, and you keep your own timing.

Manavgat Waterfall & river (30 minutes)

The closest and easiest outing is the Manavgat Waterfall, a wide, low cascade on the Manavgat River just north of Side. It's a short, shady stop with riverside tea gardens, and it pairs perfectly with a river boat trip or the Manavgat grand bazaar. Half a day is plenty, which leaves the afternoon for the beach.

Aspendos Roman theatre (45 minutes)

Aspendos has the best-preserved Roman theatre in the world — a vast, near-intact amphitheatre that still hosts concerts and opera. It's a genuinely awe-inspiring stop, and the nearby Roman aqueduct and the ancient site of Perge can be added on the same trip. Go early to beat the heat and the coaches.

Green Canyon at the Oymapınar dam (50 minutes)

Behind Manavgat, the Oymapınar dam has flooded a gorge into the Green Canyon — a long, deep, emerald reservoir ringed by pine mountains. Boat trips glide up the canyon with swimming stops in water that stays cool even in high summer. It's one of the most relaxing half-days near Side.

Köprülü Canyon & rafting (1 hour 15)

For something more active, Köprülü Canyon is the region's rafting centre — a 14-kilometre gorge on the Köprü river with easy, family-friendly white-water runs, a Roman bridge and the ancient hilltop city of Selge. A morning on the river and a trout lunch on a riverside platform make a superb day.

Pamukkale travertines & Hierapolis (3 hours)

Further afield but worth the drive, Pamukkale is the surreal cascade of white travertine terraces filled with warm turquoise water, with the ruins of the spa city of Hierapolis and its Roman theatre on the hill above. It's a long day from Side, so start very early — but the "cotton castle" is unlike anywhere else on earth.

Kekova sunken city (2 hours 45)

West along the coast, Kekova is a small island whose northern shore hides the half-submerged ruins of a Lycian town, drowned by earthquakes in the second century. You see the sunken walls and staircases through clear, shallow water from a boat, with the castle village of Kaleköy and its rock tombs standing in the sea nearby. Magical, and quite unlike anything else.

Kaş & Kalkan harbour towns (2h30–2h45)

If you want a change of pace from the big resorts, the Lycian harbour towns of Kaş and Kalkan are the prettiest on the coast — whitewashed lanes tumbling to marinas, rock tombs in the cliffs, rooftop restaurants and quiet coves. Kaş is the diving capital; Kalkan the chic dining and villa town. Either makes a lovely, slower day, and the turquoise Kaputaş beach lies between them.

Patara beach & ancient city (2h40)

Patara is two wonders in one: an 18-kilometre sweep of protected golden sand — one of the longest and wildest beaches in the Mediterranean and a turtle-nesting site — right behind the ruins of Patara, capital of the ancient Lycian League. A single ticket covers both, so you can wander a colonnaded Roman street and then walk straight out onto the dunes.

Dalyan, İztuzu & the rock tombs (2h50)

Dalyan is a river town where wooden boats glide through reed beds past the cliff-carved king tombs of ancient Kaunos, down to İztuzu (Turtle) Beach — a protected 4.5-kilometre sand spit between sea and river. Add the open-air sulphur mud baths and it's one of the most characterful days on the whole coast.

Ölüdeniz Blue Lagoon & paragliding (3h15)

The furthest of the classic trips, Ölüdeniz is the picture-postcard of Turkey — a sheltered turquoise lagoon behind a white sand spit, backed by the Babadağ mountain from which tandem paragliders drift down over the beach all day. It's a very long day from Side, so start at dawn, but the Blue Lagoon is on everyone's bucket list for a reason.

How to plan your day trips

A few honest tips to make the most of these:

  • Match the distance to the day. Manavgat, Aspendos and Green Canyon are easy half-days; Pamukkale, Kekova, Patara, Dalyan and Ölüdeniz are full days that need an early start.
  • Go early. The heat, the crowds and the coach tours all build through the morning, so a 7–8am start transforms the far trips.
  • Bring the basics. Sun protection, water and comfortable shoes for the ruins and canyons; swimwear and a towel for the lagoons and beaches.
  • A private transfer keeps it simple. You skip the fixed tour-bus schedule, travel directly, and the driver waits while you explore — which is what makes a long trip like Ölüdeniz or Pamukkale actually enjoyable.
